Why can Open Water divers only dive the shallower slope at slack?
Open Water certification limits divers to 18 m and includes no formal drift training. Cape Kri’s point sits below that limit and carries the strongest flow, so a guide cannot take an Open Water diver where the biggest schools gather without breaking two rules at once.
Timing is the workable answer. For roughly 30-40 minutes either side of slack, the current on the upper slope eases enough for a divemaster to hold a small group at 12-18 m over the coral gardens, where sweetlips, snapper and reef sharks still pass through. Outside that window the group risks being pushed off the reef into the strait. When is Cape Kri at its best?
October to April is the main season: Dampier Strait seas at Beaufort 1-3, 25-30 m visibility, water at 28-30 C. December to February pushes central-region visibility to 30-40 m and overlaps with manta season at nearby Manta Sandy, so those are the busiest, priciest weeks; book liveaboards and luxury packages four to six months ahead.
May and September bring 20-25 m visibility and stronger currents that pull pelagics onto the point. June to August drops to 15-20 m with choppier northern seas; Kri-based day boats keep running, but many liveaboards relocate, so dive-and-stay becomes the practical format.

Not realistically. The Sorong-Waisai ferry takes about two hours each way and Cape Kri is another 30 minutes by speedboat, so a same-day return from Sorong leaves no usable tide window. Sleep in Waisai or on Kri Island the night before and take the 07:30 day boat, or fold the dive into a dive-and-stay or liveaboard plan.
How many logged dives should I have before Cape Kri?
Partner dive centres generally want Advanced Open Water plus drift experience for the full point profile, and many Raja Ampat liveaboards state a minimum of roughly 50 logged dives as of 2026.
