A Raja Ampat diving and homestay package pairs a Papuan family-run homestay on Arborek, Kri, Gam or near Waisai with day dives from a licensed partner dive centre’s boat. Nightly cost sits well below a resort, the guides hold the same licences, and park fees are identical for every guest.
This is the value tier of Raja Ampat diving. All figures below are 2026 indications; confirm at booking.
What does a homestay actually give you compared with a resort?
Raja Ampat homestays are family-run guesthouses of local timber and palm thatch, mostly on Arborek, Kri and Gam or around Waisai on Waigeo. Many stand over the water on stilts, and listings are priced per person per night with three meals included. What you give up is comfort infrastructure, not the diving.
| What you get | Family-run homestay (Arborek, Kri, Gam, Waisai area) | Dive resort |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | Mattress on a raised platform or simple bed, mosquito net, palm-thatch bungalow, some over water | Proper bed, en-suite bathroom, often air-conditioning |
| Meals | Three set meals daily: rice, grilled or fried fish, vegetables, sometimes noodles; tea and coffee | Buffet or menu with Western options, bar |
| Drinking water | Refill from gallon dispensers; bring a reusable bottle | Filtered or bottled, unlimited |
| Electricity | Generator or solar, commonly evening hours only (roughly dusk to late night); charge cameras then | 24-hour power |
| Bathroom | Shared or basic private, cold water, sometimes a bucket “mandi” | Private, hot shower |
| Connectivity | Patchy mobile signal on some islands, usually no Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi in common areas, sometimes rooms |
| Dive operation | Licensed partner dive centre’s boat collects you or is based on the same island; tanks and guide provided | In-house dive centre on the jetty |
| Guiding standard | Licensed dive professionals, same certification checks | Licensed dive professionals |
| Park fees (foreign guest, 2026) | Same as resort guests | Same as homestay guests |
Two things do not change between the columns: who guides you underwater and what the marine park charges. That is the whole value-tier argument.
How much does a 4-day or 6-day homestay diving package cost in 2026?
Each component is quoted on request for your island, dates, nights, dive count, guest count and inclusions. Flights to Sorong are excluded.
| Cost component (per foreign guest) | 4 days / 3 nights, 4 dives | 6 days / 5 nights, 8 dives |
|---|---|---|
| Homestay nights, full board | Quote on request | Quote on request |
| Guided boat dives with licensed partner dive centre: tank, weights, guide | Quote on request | Quote on request |
| Indicative total, excluding flights | Quote on request | Quote on request |
| Full equipment rental, if needed | Quote on request | Quote on request |
Confirm every component at booking. Most homestays and some village dive operators settle in rupiah; reliable ATMs are in Sorong and Waisai.
Park fees are a fixed cost per guest; six days spreads that fixed cost across eight dives instead of four, which is why the longer plan is better value per dive.
Which park fees apply to homestay divers?
Since 1 January 2026, Raja Ampat has charged two separate items, both per guest whether they dive, snorkel or stay on the beach.
The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is USD 80 per person per year, with children under 12 exempt. The Raja Ampat Regency entry ticket is charged separately per visit for foreign tourists and covers one trip only.
The Raja Ampat marine park fee for Indonesian tourists is USD 40 per person per year. Indonesian guests also pay the Regency entry ticket separately; confirm the current rate at booking.
The levy funds patrols, moorings, reef rehabilitation and waste management.
Which dive sites can you reach from a homestay?
Raja Ampat holds the highest recorded reef-fish diversity on earth, and the densest of it sits in the Dampier Strait, where the Kri, Arborek and Gam homestays are. The marquee sites are a short boat run away.
- Cape Kri (off Kri Island): the biomass site, current sweeping a reef slope. Operators treat it as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience.
- Blue Magic: a current-swept pinnacle for pelagics and, in season, mantas. Same Advanced Open Water caveat.
- Manta Sandy: a managed cleaning station dived year-round, most reliable October to April and especially December to March. No touching, no chasing, groups held off the station; rangers patrol.
- Sheltered reefs near Waisai and the Arborek jetty: the Open Water diver’s ground, generally limited to 18-20 m and softer current.
Misool and Wayag are not day-trip territory from a Dampier Strait homestay; they belong to liveaboard itineraries covered elsewhere on this site.
Who guides the dives, and what is Komodo Luxury’s role?
Plainly: Komodo Luxury is a tour and vessel operator, not a PADI dive centre. The underwater work is run by a licensed partner dive centre or licensed dive master in the Dampier Strait, who check your certification card and logbook, set the site to your level, supply tanks and weights, and skipper the dive boat.
Komodo Luxury’s reservations team does the rest: matching you to an island, booking the nights, sequencing ferry and boat transfers, and processing both permits before you land in Sorong. Its standing advice: travel October to April and, for the current-swept sites, hold Advanced Open Water plus current experience.
When is the best time for a homestay diving trip?
The main season runs October to April: Dampier Strait seas at Beaufort 1-3, visibility 25-30 m, water 28-30 C. December to February brings 30-40 m visibility in the central region and manta high season, but also the fullest homestays and highest nightly rates.
May and September are the value months: 20-25 m visibility, 27-29 C, strong currents that pull in pelagics, beds easier to find. June to August in the north means 15-20 m visibility and choppier crossings; expect some sites skipped for swell.
How does booking work?
- Send your dates and level. WhatsApp 628113823875 with travel dates, number of divers, certification level and logged dives, and the nightly budget you want to stay under.
- Receive a component quote. The reservations team returns a per-person breakdown in the format of the table above, naming the island, nights, dive count and the partner dive centre.
- Confirm and pay the deposit. Homestay nights and dive slots are held once the deposit clears; fees are re-checked against the regulation in force that day.
- Fly to Sorong (SOQ). The team sequences the fast ferry to Waisai and the boat to your island, and processes the marine park card and regency ticket. Combining with Komodo? Labuan Bajo-Sorong flights take about 3.5 hours.
- Dive. Two guided boat dives per full day is the standard rhythm; a third or night dive is arranged case by case.
