Raja Ampat beginner diving packages keep Open Water divers on Dampier Strait’s calmer sites (Arborek Jetty, Manta Sandy, Friwen Wall, Sardine Reef at slack, Cape Kri’s shallow slope) within 18-20 m, with a licensed partner divemaster at low ratios. Komodo Luxury arranges the base, the boat and a guide briefed on your logbook.
One point up front for new Open Water divers. Komodo Luxury is a boat and tour operator. It is not a PADI or SSI dive centre. Every dive is led, and every course is taught, by a licensed partner dive centre. Komodo Luxury handles the part around it: base, boats, transfers, permits and the brief your guide reads before day one.
Which Raja Ampat dive sites suit Open Water divers?
Raja Ampat holds the highest recorded reef-fish diversity on earth, and much of it sits in shallow, gentle water. The partner divemaster picks sites by tide and current each morning, so treat this table as a plan, not a promise.
| Site | Area | Why it suits, or why it waits | Open Water status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arborek Jetty | Arborek Island, Dampier Strait | Shallow, sheltered, easy entry, dense fish life under the jetty | Suitable |
| Manta Sandy | Dampier Strait | Managed manta cleaning station; divers stay off the station, no touching or chasing | Suitable, rules briefed first |
| Friwen Wall | Friwen Island, near Waisai | Wall with a clear depth reference and usually mild current | Suitable |
| Sardine Reef | Dampier Strait | Very rich reef, but current can run hard | Suitable at slack tide only |
| Cape Kri, shallow slope | Kri Island | Signature high-biomass site | Divemaster’s call on the day |
| Cape Kri, full drift | Kri Island | Strong current, drift skills needed | Held back until Advanced Open Water |
| Blue Magic | Dampier Strait | Current-swept pinnacle for pelagics and mantas | Held back until Advanced Open Water |
| Misool pinnacles | South Raja Ampat | Current, depth and remote position | Held back until Advanced Open Water |
| Wayag | North Raja Ampat | Karst viewpoint and snorkelling on a long boat day | Viewpoint trip, not a beginner dive |
Operators treat Cape Kri, Blue Magic and the Misool pinnacles as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience. Open Water divers are generally kept to 18-20 m and lower-current sites near Waisai and resort reefs.
What do the 4-day and 6-day beginner builds include?
Both builds use two dives per diving day. The first dive is always a refresher or check dive in shallow water, so the guide sees your buoyancy and gear handling before any current.
| 4-day build | 6-day build | |
|---|---|---|
| Diving days | 4 | 6 |
| Dives (2 per day) | 8 | 12 |
| Nights on base | 5 (arrival and flight-out days added) | 7 |
| Dive 1 | Refresher dive, shallow reef | Refresher dive, shallow reef |
| Core sites | Friwen Wall, Arborek Jetty, Manta Sandy, Sardine Reef at slack | Same, plus Cape Kri shallow slope and a second Manta Sandy dive |
| Advanced Open Water add-on | Tight fit | Can run alongside, taught by the partner centre |
| No-fly buffer | Last dive the day before departure | Last dive the day before departure |
Thin logbook? Take the 6-day build. Spare days let the guide skip a site when current picks up and return later in the week.
What does a beginner package cost in 2026?
Land-based package prices depend on the partner centre’s dive rates, the base you choose and boat transfers, so they are quoted per request and itemised in writing. The fixed costs below are public 2026 figures and subject to change; confirm at booking.
| Cost line | 2026 figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Marine park conservation card, international | IDR 1,000,000 per person per year | Children under 12 exempt; Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024 |
| Raja Ampat Regency entry ticket | Confirm at booking | Regent Regulation 34/2025, effective 1 January 2026 |
| Marine park conservation card, Indonesian citizens | IDR 500,000 per person per year (IDR 250,000 for Papua-area ID holders from outside Southwest Papua, IDR 150,000 for Southwest Papua ID holders) | Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024 |
| 4-day or 6-day dive-and-stay | Quoted per request | Partner dive rates, base category, transfers |
| Step up to a dive liveaboard | Quote on request | Quoted for the specific vessel, dates, duration, guest count and inclusions |
The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year, with children under 12 exempt, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). The charges apply to every guest, diver or not, even on a single day trip.
When is the best time for a beginner dive trip?
October to April. According to seasonal guides, the Dampier Strait sits at Beaufort 1-3 in these months, with 25-30 m visibility and 28-30 C water. That is the easiest water a new diver will find here.
- December to February: peak 30-40 m visibility and manta high season, but also the busiest and most expensive weeks.
- May and September: 20-25 m visibility and stronger currents. Good for pelagics, harder for beginners.
- June to August: 15-20 m visibility and choppier seas in the north. Not the month to take your first drift.
Guides advise booking 4-6 months ahead for October-April travel.
How does booking work?
- Send your logbook count and last dive date on WhatsApp, with your certification level, travel month and how many non-divers are coming.
- The concierge matches a partner centre and base and passes your logbook details to the guide who will lead you.
- You get a written, itemised quote showing dives, transfers, the guide-to-diver ratio and park fees listed separately.
- You confirm dates and send documents: certification card copy, passport details and the partner centre’s medical form. Permits are usually processed by the operator.
- You fly into Sorong (SOQ), take the ferry or fast boat to Waisai, and start with the refresher dive.
Can you upgrade to Advanced Open Water during the trip?
Yes, on site, and only through the partner PADI or SSI centre. Komodo Luxury schedules it into your days; it does not teach or certify. The course opens sites like Blue Magic and the full Cape Kri drift.
Be realistic about liveaboards. Many Raja Ampat dive liveaboards now ask for Advanced Open Water plus about 50 logged dives, so a fresh card alone may not qualify you. Land-based diving is where most beginners build those numbers.
Combining with Komodo? Labuan Bajo-Sorong flights take about 3.5 hours.
> Plan your beginner dives with the Komodo Luxury concierge. Send two numbers: your logbook count and your last dive date. We reply with a site plan, a base option and an itemised quote from a licensed partner centre. WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or email sales@komodoluxury.com. All 2026 figures are indicative and confirmed at booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dive Raja Ampat with only an Open Water certification?
Yes. Open Water divers dive Raja Ampat regularly on land-based packages, kept to 18-20 m and lower-current sites such as Arborek Jetty, Friwen Wall and Manta Sandy. Stronger sites like Blue Magic, the full Cape Kri drift and the Misool pinnacles are generally held back until you hold Advanced Open Water and have some drift experience.
Do I need a refresher dive if I have not dived for a while?
Every beginner build here starts with a refresher or check dive regardless, so the guide can see your buoyancy and gear handling in shallow water. If your last dive was a long time ago, the partner centre may add a skills session first. Send your last dive date early so the plan reflects it.
Can beginner divers see manta rays in Raja Ampat?
Often, yes. Manta Sandy in the Dampier Strait is a managed cleaning station suitable for Open Water divers and is dived year-round, most reliably October to April and especially December to March. Divers stay positioned off the station, never touch or chase, and patrols enforce those rules. Sightings are likely in season but never guaranteed.
Do non-divers in my group pay the Raja Ampat fees?
Yes. From 1 January 2026 every guest pays both the marine park conservation card and the regency entry ticket, whether they dive or not, even on a single day trip. Children under 12 are exempt from the conservation card. Confirm current amounts at booking.
