For Dampier Strait diving, stay on Kri, Gam, Arborek or the Waisai coast, because each puts Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Manta Sandy within about an hour by speedboat. Stay in Misool only if your trip centres on the southern pinnacles and Magic Mountain: it lies hours further south and cannot be day-tripped from the north.

Kri wins for current-swept, high-biomass sites. Arborek wins for mantas. Gam and Waisai trade a longer ride for quieter bays or easier arrival logistics.
Which base suits which kind of diver?
- Kri Island: for experienced divers chasing fish density. Operators treat Cape Kri and Blue Magic as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience, and some liveaboards now ask for AOW plus around 50 logged dives.
- Arborek: for manta-first trips. Manta Sandy is a managed cleaning station dived year-round, most reliable from October to April and especially December to March. The rules are strict: no touching, no chasing, and groups stay positioned off the station while patrols enforce it.
- Gam: for divers who want calm bays and homestay life, and accept a longer commute to the strait.
- Waisai coast: for arrivals, short stays and Open Water divers. Open Water divers are generally limited to 18-20 m on lower-current sites near Waisai and on resort reefs, so a town-side base loses little.

Wayag is not a dive base. It is chiefly a karst viewpoint and snorkelling stop, reached by liveaboard or a long day boat.

What will fees and seasons add to the decision?
Fees do not change with your base. From 1 January 2026 every guest pays two charges, diver or not, even on a single day trip:
- Marine park conservation card. The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year, with children under 12 exempt, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). The Raja Ampat marine park fee for Indonesian tourists is IDR 500,000 per person per year, or IDR 250,000 for Papua-area ID holders from outside Southwest Papua and IDR 150,000 for Southwest Papua ID holders, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16).
- Regency entry ticket. Under Regent Regulation 34/2025, it is charged per visit and valid for one trip only.

- October-April: every northern base works. Seas run Beaufort 1-3, visibility 25-30 m, water 28-30 C.

- May and September: 20-25 m visibility and strong currents that pull in pelagics, which favours a Kri base.

How do you turn a base choice into a real itinerary?
Fly into Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok airport (SOQ), then take the ferry or fast boat from Sorong harbour to Waisai before your island transfer. Permits are usually processed by the operator.
On trips of seven nights or more, a split stay often beats one base. Four nights on Kri for Cape Kri and Blue Magic, then three on Arborek for Manta Sandy, cuts total boat time. Flights from Labuan Bajo to Sorong take about 3.5 hours, so a combined route of five days in Komodo followed by 7-10 days in Raja Ampat is realistic. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dive Raja Ampat while staying in Sorong?
Not practically. Sorong is the gateway city with the SOQ airport, but Dampier Strait sites lie beyond Waisai, which you reach by ferry or fast boat from Sorong harbour first. Repeating that crossing every dive day eats into dive time and daylight. Plan to sleep at least on the Waisai coast, and ideally on Kri, Gam or Arborek.
Is Arborek or Kri the better base for seeing manta rays?
Arborek, on proximity alone, because Manta Sandy is only a few minutes away and you can reach the cleaning station early. Kri still gives manta chances at Blue Magic plus far better access to Cape Kri. Whichever you choose, the most reliable manta months are October to April, especially December to March.
Where should I stay for Raja Ampat diving between June and August?
Consider Misool. During June to August the northern Dampier Strait sees 15-20 m visibility and choppier seas, while Misool stays relatively sheltered.
