Raja Ampat Dive Sites Guide: 3 Regions, Seasons, Levels

Raja Ampat Dive Sites Guide: 3 Regions, Seasons, Levels

Raja Ampat’s dive sites cluster into three regions: Dampier Strait and the central islands (Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Manta Sandy, Sardine Reef, Arborek Jetty, Mike’s Point), Misool in the south (Magic Mountain, Boo Windows, Four Kings) and the north (Wayag, Kawe, Fam/Piaynemo). Each has its own season, minimum certification and access route: day boat from Waisai, dive resort or liveaboard.

Raja Ampat holds the highest recorded reef-fish diversity on earth, and that abundance is spread across an archipelago far wider than one trip can cover. Choosing sites badly wastes days on crossings. Choosing well means the right region in the right month at the right level.

This guide keeps to dive-site knowledge: where each site sits, how deep it runs, how much current to expect, what a dive centre will ask to see in your logbook, and which months deliver. Raja Ampat Diving Tour arranges trips through Komodo Luxury, a boat and tour operator. The diving itself is led by licensed partner dive centres and divemasters; Komodo Luxury is not a PADI centre and does not claim to be one.

How are Raja Ampat’s dive sites organised?

Think of the park as three blocks. Dampier Strait is the busy middle, an hour or less by speedboat from Waisai, where the famous biomass sites sit. Misool is a separate southern archipelago with its own conservation area, reached only by liveaboard or a resort stay. The north (Wayag, Kawe, the Fam group) is karst country: long crossings, lagoons, and reefs that reward calm seas.

Depth ranges and level notes are indicative, drawn from operator briefings as of 2026. The partner dive centre makes the final call on the day, based on current, weather and your logbook.

What do conditions look like in each region through the year?

Period Dampier Strait / central Misool (south) North (Wayag, Kawe, Fam) Planning note
Oct-Dec Seas Beaufort 1-3, visibility 25-30 m, water 28-30 C Calm, prime season opens Crossings reliable, lagoons flat Liveaboards return to full rotation; book 4-6 months ahead
Jan-Mar Peak 30-40 m visibility Dec-Feb; manta high season Prime; mantas at Magic Mountain Good, occasional squalls Busiest and most expensive weeks of the year
Apr-Jun April still main season; May shoulder 20-25 m, 27-29 C, strong currents draw pelagics; June north drops to 15-20 m Stays relatively sheltered Choppier from June Many liveaboards relocate or reduce operations from June
Jul-Sep 15-20 m visibility, choppier seas, 26-28 C until September shoulder (20-25 m) Sheltered reefs, but wind and swell make crossings unpredictable Wayag and Fam day trips least predictable Resort-based Dampier diving continues; plan around the weather window

Guides consistently name October to April as the main season. Komodo Luxury recommends the same window, with Advanced Open Water and current experience for the headline sites.

Why is Dampier Strait the centre of most Raja Ampat diving tours?

Because everything is close. From Waisai or the resorts on Kri, Gam and Arborek, a day boat reaches a dozen sites without a long open-water crossing. The strait funnels nutrient-rich water between Waigeo and Batanta, which is why the fish counts here are the ones that made the region’s reputation. It is also the only region where an Open Water diver has a genuine choice of sites.

Why is Cape Kri the signature Raja Ampat dive?

Cape Kri, on the eastern tip of Kri Island, is the high-biomass site every operator lists first. Its sloping reef drops past 30 m, and the current running along the point stacks jacks, barracuda, snapper and reef sharks in a single field of view. That current is the reason dive centres treat it as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience. See the dedicated Cape Kri diving tour page for dive plans, timing and pricing.

Why is Blue Magic treated as Advanced Open Water territory?

Blue Magic is a submerged pinnacle in open water, topping out around 8 m and falling to 30 m. Current wraps around it and pulls in pelagics: trevally, tuna, sharks, and mantas in season, with wobbegongs tucked under the ledges. There is no reef to hide behind, so drift control and a negative entry matter. Liveaboards increasingly state minimums such as AOW plus about 50 logged dives for sites like this. The Blue Magic Raja Ampat diving tour page covers the briefing in detail.

When is Manta Sandy at its most reliable?

Manta Sandy is a managed cleaning station at 12-18 m on a sandy bottom, dived year-round and most reliable from October to April, with December to March the strongest run. Divers hold position behind a line of marker rocks while reef mantas circle the cleaning blocks. Groups are small, guides count heads, and patrols enforce the rules. Details, dive plans and season timing sit on the Manta Sandy Raja Ampat dive tour page.

What do Sardine Reef, Arborek Jetty and Mike’s Point add?

  • Sardine Reef: a submerged reef where fish density rivals Cape Kri on a good current day; AOW.
  • Arborek Jetty: the easiest dive in the strait, 3-18 m under a village jetty, thick with glassfish and macro life; Open Water and a good check-dive.
  • Mike’s Point: a wall of soft coral and big fish on the Kerupiar side of the strait; current can be strong, so AOW.

What is different about diving Misool in the south?

Misool is a separate world. The southern archipelago is a co-managed conservation area with its own patrols, its own moorings and, in some zones, its own contribution and daily diver caps on top of the regency and marine park fees. Sites are pinnacles, ridges and swim-throughs in clear water, and the region stays relatively sheltered from June to August when the north gets choppy. The catch is access: there is no day boat from Waisai. You reach Misool on a dive liveaboard or by staying at a resort in the south. The Misool Raja Ampat diving tour page explains both routes.

What do Magic Mountain, Boo Windows and Four Kings each deliver?

  • Magic Mountain (Shadow Reef): a pinnacle from 6 m to 30 m where reef and oceanic mantas visit a cleaning station roughly September to June; AOW, moderate to strong current.
  • Boo Windows: two openings in the reef that divers pass through at 5-10 m before a soft-coral slope; the shallow side is gentle enough for a guided Open Water diver on a calm day.
  • Four Kings: four pinnacles in a line, 10-35 m, with schooling fish and sharks in current; AOW.

Is Wayag a dive destination or a viewpoint?

Mostly a viewpoint, with excellent snorkelling. Wayag’s karst islands and lagoons are the postcard of Raja Ampat, and the climb to the ridge is the reason most people go. The reefs inside and around the lagoon are shallow, 5-20 m, with blacktip reef sharks in the sandy shallows. Serious divers treat Wayag as a rest-day stop on a northern liveaboard route rather than a target in itself. From July to September wind and swell make the crossing less predictable. Timing, what the boat ride involves and what to expect underwater are on the Wayag Raja Ampat diving tour page.

How do Kawe and Fam/Piaynemo fit a northern itinerary?

Kawe sits close to the equator line, with pinnacles and slopes in moderate to strong current that suit Advanced divers; it is a liveaboard site. The Fam group, including Piaynemo and Melissa’s Garden, lies north-west of Dampier Strait. Its hard-coral gardens are shallow and mild on calm days, reachable on a long day boat from Waisai when the sea allows, and it pairs a dive with the Piaynemo viewpoint climb.

When and where do you see mantas in Raja Ampat?

Three places, two calendars. In Dampier Strait, Manta Sandy runs year-round with the most reliable sightings October to April and the peak December to March. Blue Magic and Manta Ridge host mantas in the same window. In Misool, Magic Mountain sees mantas roughly September to June, so a southern trip in the shoulder months still has a real chance.

The rules are the same everywhere and patrols enforce them:

  1. No touching, no chasing, no blocking a manta’s path.
  2. Groups stay positioned off the cleaning station, behind the markers.
  3. Boats tie to moorings; anchoring on the reef is not allowed.
  4. Guides limit group size and time on station.

What certification does each site require?

  • Open Water: generally limited to 18-20 m and lower-current sites near Waisai and the resort reefs: Arborek Jetty, house reefs, Manta Sandy in calm conditions, Fam gardens on a flat day.
  • Advanced Open Water with drift experience: Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Mike’s Point and the Misool pinnacles. Operators treat these as AOW territory because of current, depth and negative entries.
  • AOW plus about 50 logged dives: the minimum many liveaboards now state for full itineraries, since a week of three to four current dives a day is not a place to learn drift technique.

A Discover Scuba or Open Water course can be done through partner dive centres near Waisai, but it belongs before the trip, not on the headline sites.

How do you reach each region: day boat, resort or liveaboard?

Format Regions reached Typical dives per day Suits Read more
Day dive tour from Waisai or Sorong Dampier Strait; Fam on calm days 2-3 Short stays, Open Water divers mixing easy and advanced sites Raja Ampat day diving tour
Dive-and-stay package Dampier Strait from Kri, Gam or Arborek; Misool from a southern resort 2-3 4-7 night trips, families, mixed diver and non-diver groups Raja Ampat dive-and-stay package
Dive liveaboard All three regions, including Misool and Wayag 3-4 AOW divers with about 50 dives who want the full map Raja Ampat dive liveaboard trips

On cost, Raja Ampat luxury dive liveaboards are quoted on request for the specific vessel, dates, duration, guest count and inclusions; confirm at booking.

Fees sit on top of any format. The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, in force since 30 December 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). A separate regency entry ticket under Regent Regulation 34/2025 is charged per visit. Fees are charged per guest even on a single day trip, so confirm the current amounts at booking.

Getting there: fly to Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok airport, SOQ), then ferry or fast boat to Waisai; the operator normally processes permits. Labuan Bajo to Sorong flights take about 3.5 hours, which is why five days in Komodo followed by seven to ten in Raja Ampat is a workable combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Raja Ampat dive sites for first-time visitors?

Start in Dampier Strait. Arborek Jetty is a gentle check-dive, Manta Sandy in calm conditions gives an Open Water diver a real manta encounter, and the resort house reefs on Kri and Gam are shallow and rich. Cape Kri and Blue Magic come later, once a divemaster has seen you handle current comfortably.

What is the difference between central Raja Ampat and Misool dive areas?

Central Raja Ampat, meaning Dampier Strait, is close to Waisai, dense with fish and reachable by day boat, with the busiest sites in the park. Misool is a separate southern conservation area of pinnacles and swim-throughs, reached only by liveaboard or a southern resort, quieter, with its own patrols and possible daily diver caps.

Where are the most beginner-friendly dive sites in Raja Ampat?

Near Waisai and the Dampier Strait resorts. Arborek Jetty at 3-18 m, the house reefs off Kri and Gam, Manta Sandy on a calm day and the Fam hard-coral gardens all stay within 18-20 m with mild current. Dive centres keep Open Water guests at these sites until they have logged drift experience.

Why are some Raja Ampat dive sites only suitable for advanced divers?

Current and depth. Cape Kri, Blue Magic and the Misool pinnacles sit in open water where tidal flow can run hard, entries are negative and the best action is below 20 m. Operators set Advanced Open Water with drift experience as the floor, and liveaboards often add about 50 logged dives, because a mistake there has no reef to hide behind.
