A Raja Ampat diving tour from Sorong starts at Domine Eduard Osok airport (SOQ), the only practical gateway. From there you either take a same-day fast boat to Waisai for land-based diving or board a dive liveaboard directly at Sorong harbour. Komodo Luxury times the flight-to-boat handover and processes the 2026 permits before you land.
Sorong is the hinge, not the destination. The whole plan turns on what time your aircraft touches down.
Why does every Raja Ampat diving tour begin in Sorong?
There is no airport in the Raja Ampat islands. Sorong holds the runway, the ferry terminal for Waisai (the regency capital on Waigeo) and the harbour where most dive liveaboards pick up and drop off guests.
Permits are also settled here. From 1 January 2026 two charges apply: the marine park conservation card (under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024) and the Regency entry ticket under Perbup 34/2025. Komodo Luxury processes both against your passport scan.
Honesty first: Komodo Luxury is a vessel and tour operator, not a PADI dive centre. Every dive is led by a licensed partner dive centre or dive master.
Which tour starts when: does your flight time decide the plan?
Yes. Many Jakarta and Makassar connections land at SOQ between roughly 06:00 and 09:00, which makes a same-day Waisai transfer feasible. Land after lunch and the arithmetic changes.
| Arrival scenario | What is realistic | Tour that starts | First dive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning flight (before about 10:00) | Road to harbour, late-morning ferry or resort speedboat, check-in by mid-afternoon | Day dives from Waisai or dive-and-stay begins same day: gear fitting, briefing | Next morning, usually a check dive |
| Afternoon flight (after about 13:00) | Ferry usually missed; airport-area hotel, transfer next morning. Private speedboat sometimes possible in daylight, never guaranteed | Land-based package starts next day; liveaboard boards on schedule | Day two |
| Overnight in Sorong (arrive the day before) | Rested, delayed bags recovered, permits in hand | Any format, including liveaboard boarding | Day two, or the liveaboard’s afternoon check dive |
The overnight row is the one we insist on before a liveaboard. The vessel will not wait for a delayed flight, and there is no re-boarding once it clears the strait. We do not sell Sorong city tours; you sleep, eat and get on the boat.
How does the transfer chain run from SOQ to your first dive?
Five links, each with a failure mode. The buffer column is what we build into your plan.
| Link | Typical duration (2026, confirm at booking) | Failure mode | Buffer advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOQ airport to Sorong harbour | 20-30 minutes by car | Baggage delay, late aircraft | Take the later ferry if landing within 90 minutes of sailing |
| Sorong harbour to Waisai (ferry or resort speedboat) | About 2 hours across the Dampier Strait | Two sailings daily typical; July-September swell cancellations | Hold a hotel night as fallback |
| Waisai jetty | Permit check, meet the dive centre boat | Paperwork not pre-processed | Passport scan to us 14 days ahead |
| Waisai to homestay or resort (Kri, Mansuar, Gam, Arborek) | 30-90 minutes by longboat | Afternoon chop, low light | Reach Waisai before 15:00 |
| Direct liveaboard boarding (Sorong harbour) | Window set by the vessel, often late afternoon | Aircraft delay means a missed departure | Arrive one day early, no exceptions |
Misool resorts run their own crossings direct from Sorong, roughly four hours or more; July-September swell makes those and Wayag or Fam day trips less predictable.
What does a diving tour from Sorong cost in 2026?
Government fees are identical whatever you book; the tour price depends on format. All figures are 2026 indications, subject to change; confirm at booking.
| Format from Sorong | Typical duration | Indicative 2026 price basis | Government fees per foreign guest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day dives from Waisai with a licensed partner dive centre | 1-3 days, 2 dives daily | Per person on the partner centre’s 2026 rate card, quoted in writing | Itemised on the written quote |
| Dive-and-stay (resort or homestay on Kri, Mansuar or Gam) | 5-8 nights, 2-3 dives daily | Per person per night including Sorong transfers, quoted in writing | Itemised on the written quote |
| Luxury dive liveaboard boarding at Sorong | 7-10 nights, dive schedule set by the vessel and confirmed by the operator | Whole vessel, quoted on request for the specific vessel, dates, duration, guest count and inclusions | Usually charged separately from the base price |
The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year, with children under 12 exempt, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). The Raja Ampat marine park fee for Indonesian tourists is IDR 500,000 per person per year, or IDR 250,000 for Papua-area ID holders from outside Southwest Papua and IDR 150,000 for Southwest Papua ID holders, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). The Regency entry ticket is charged separately per visit; we confirm the current rate at processing.
A 2026 travel-calendar article cites a ceiling of around 5,000 permits per month. Lock October-April dates 4-6 months ahead.
Can you combine Komodo and Raja Ampat on one trip?
Yes, and Sorong makes it work. Labuan Bajo to Sorong takes about 3.5 hours by air, short enough to run five days in Komodo then seven to ten days in Raja Ampat without a Bali or Jakarta detour. Komodo Luxury quotes Komodo liveaboards on request for the specific vessel, dates, duration, guest count and inclusions, then hands you to the Raja Ampat programme at SOQ.
The sequence: last Komodo dive at least 18-24 hours before the Labuan Bajo departure, fly to Sorong, sleep one night, then board or cross to Waisai. That night doubles as your liveaboard buffer. October to April gives Beaufort 1-3 seas and 25-30 m visibility in the Dampier Strait; December to February is the 30-40 m peak and the priciest weeks.
How does booking work?
- Send the basics. Dates, flight number, certification level and logged dives. Operators treat Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Misool as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience; Open Water divers stay at 18-20 m on calmer sites near Waisai.
- Receive a format proposal. Day dives, dive-and-stay or dive liveaboard, each paired with a named licensed partner dive centre.
- Get a written quote. Tour price, SOQ transfers and both government fees itemised.
- Confirm and send documents. Passport scans and certification cards go to the partner for permits; you receive the transfer plan keyed to your flight.
- Arrive. A driver meets you at SOQ. If your flight slips, the plan re-sequences before you clear baggage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dive on the same day I land in Sorong?
Physically yes, since flying before diving carries no decompression penalty, but in practice almost never. A morning landing, harbour transfer and two-hour crossing put you at a Kri or Mansuar resort mid-afternoon, after the boats have gone out. Plan the first dive, usually a check dive, for the next morning.
Do I pay the Raja Ampat permit fees at Sorong before boarding the ferry?
Normally the operator processes both charges against a passport scan sent in advance. That means the marine park conservation card plus the Regency entry ticket. Confirm amounts at booking.
Is there a boat from Sorong straight to Kri or Misool without stopping at Waisai?
Several resorts run their own speedboats direct from Sorong harbour to their jetty, timed to specific inbound flights. Misool crossings are long, roughly four hours or more, and less predictable in the July-September swell. Where a direct transfer exists we build it in; otherwise the public fast ferry to Waisai is the reliable default.
