Most people start by comparing rooms. The better first question is whether you want to sleep on land at all. The format sets your reach, your price basis and how well non-divers fit in. The room tier comes after that.

Is a dive and stay better than a dive liveaboard?
It depends on who is travelling and where you want to dive. A dive and stay keeps you on land and within day-boat range of the Dampier Strait. A liveaboard moves the bed so the itinerary can reach remote regions.

Wayag, in the far north, is normally reached by liveaboard or a dedicated long-range charter, not by a day boat from a Dampier Strait base. Misool, far to the south, works either way: as a stop on a liveaboard route or as a separate land-based trip at a Misool resort. It does not pair with Dampier Strait day boats.

Does it matter which island you sleep on?
Yes, but it is the last step, not the first. In short, sleep close to the sites you care about most and keep Waisai town for transit nights. The island-by-island comparison, with named sites and travel times, is in where to stay in Raja Ampat for diving.
Does your certification level push you towards one format?
Often it does. Many liveaboards now ask for Advanced Open Water plus about 50 logged dives, because their itineraries lean on current-swept sites. That makes a liveaboard a poor fit for a newly certified diver, however good the cabin.
A dive and stay is more flexible. Open Water divers can stay at 18-20 m on lower-current reefs such as Sawandarek and Yenbuba jetties, Friwen Wall and Mioskon, which still sit inside the region with the highest recorded reef-fish diversity on earth. Partner centres generally plan the day around the least experienced diver on the boat.

How long should a dive and stay run?
The land-based format works at almost any length, but two fixed costs push people towards longer stays. The 2026 fees below cost the same for two dive days as for nine, and each Sorong-Waisai crossing takes most of a day. Arrival afternoons go to transfers, and the last morning stays clear for the no-fly interval.

What does each format bundle, and what is always extra?

Two charges sit outside both formats. Since 1 January 2026, visitors to Raja Ampat pay two separate fees, and operators nearly always list them outside the nightly or cabin rate.
- Marine park conservation card: The Raja Ampat marine park fee for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year, with children under 12 exempt, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16).
- Regency entry ticket (Perbup 34/2025): charged per visit; confirm the current rate at booking.
The Raja Ampat marine park fee for Indonesian tourists is IDR 500,000 per person per year, or IDR 250,000 for Papua-area ID holders from outside Southwest Papua and IDR 150,000 for Southwest Papua ID holders, under Southwest Papua Governor Regulation No. 32 of 2024, as listed by the Raja Ampat MPA Management Authority (checked 2026-09-16). Dive insurance (DAN or equivalent) is required by most partner centres on both formats.
When is land-based diving at its best?
October to April is the main season. Dampier Strait seas sit at Beaufort 1-3, visibility runs 25-30 m and water is 28-30 C. Calm seas matter more on land than on a liveaboard, because every dive depends on a day-boat run. December to February brings peak 30-40 m visibility and manta high season at Manta Sandy, along with the busiest and most expensive weeks.
