Raja Ampat is not one dive area. It runs from the Dampier Strait near Waisai, home to Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Manta Sandy, down to Misool in the south and up to the Wayag karst lagoons in the far north. A month that is perfect in one region can be rough in another.
- Main season, October–April. Calm Dampier Strait (Beaufort 1–3), 25–30 m visibility, 28–30°C water. Most Raja Ampat liveaboards schedule their trips inside this window.
- Peak, December–February. Central-region visibility can stretch to 30–40 m and manta activity is at its height. Boats fill and rates climb.
- Shoulder, May and September. Visibility of 20–25 m, water at 27–29°C and strong currents that pull in pelagics. Rewarding for confident drift divers.
- Northern off-season, June–August. Visibility drops to 15–20 m, seas get choppier and water cools to 26–28°C. Many liveaboards relocate or cut departures. Misool, further south, stays relatively sheltered.

Manta Sandy is a managed cleaning station and is dived all year, yet it is most dependable from October to April and especially December to March. Blue Magic and Manta Ridge also host mantas. Wherever you see them, the rules are the same: no touching, no chasing, and groups stay positioned off the station while park patrols enforce it.

Does the season change the certification you need?
Currents matter more than the calendar, but the calendar shapes the currents. Operators treat Cape Kri, Blue Magic and the Misool pinnacles as Advanced Open Water territory with drift experience, and liveaboards increasingly set minimums such as AOW plus about 50 logged dives. In May and September, when currents run strong, treat that bar as firm.
Open Water divers are generally limited to 18–20 m and lower-current sites near Waisai and resort house reefs. Wayag is chiefly a viewpoint and snorkelling stop, so non-divers can enjoy it in calm months too.
Komodo Luxury, the Labuan Bajo operator that arranges these trips, recommends October–April and AOW plus current experience. It runs boats and tours and is not a PADI dive centre: every dive is led by licensed partner dive centres and dive masters, who make the final site call on the day.
How far ahead should you book, and what does it cost?
For October–April, guides advise booking liveaboards and luxury packages four to six months ahead. A 2026 travel-calendar article also cites a planning ceiling of around 5,000 permits per month, another reason peak months fill early.

- Dive liveaboard. Raja Ampat luxury dive liveaboards are quoted on request for the specific vessel, dates, duration, guest count and inclusions, all-inclusive and on a whole-vessel basis, with the daily dive schedule set by the operator and partner dive centre.
- Marine park conservation card. Fees apply to every guest, diver or not, and liveaboards usually bill them separately. Misool’s co-managed area may add its own contribution and daily diver caps.
Getting there works in any season. Fly to Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok, SOQ), then take the ferry or fast boat to Waisai; operators usually process permits. Labuan Bajo to Sorong takes about 3.5 hours by air, so a common October–April pairing is five days in Komodo followed by seven to ten days in Raja Ampat.
